Rediscovering The Alchemist

Monday, I bought a new copy of Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist.

I’ve owned this book before and read it a couple of times in the past. I had to buy a new copy, because I often give it away to someone who I think would benefit from reading it.

It is a simple book and an easy read; I finished it yesterday just by reading a few pages on the train each day.

For me, The Alchemist is the perfect companion book to The Artist’s Way.  I discovered both books at around the same time by chance; however, both have taught me that chance is the manifestation of a higher power working for my good.

And, when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.—Paulo Coelho, The Alchemist

It is a fictional story of a boy on a quest to find his Personal Legend, a treasure that was revealed to him in his dreams.  During his pilgrimage he learns many spiritual principles, including how to interpret the Universal Language, to connect with the Soul of the World, and to recognize and follow Omens.

In this story, I see a reflection of my own journey in discovering my artistic destiny.  It has taught me to listen to and follow my heart’s desires and to take advantage of the opportunities that God and the Universe have laid before me in personal and professional endeavors.

Next week, I’ll explore the individual principles in The Alchemist and how they connect to The Artist’s Way and can be applied to one’s life.  Until then, you have a fantastic and blessed weekend.
